Can Electronic Notaries be done remotely? No, electronic notarizations must be done in person.

Can a public key certificate be seen on the document? No, it is an invisible digital signature that identifies the person certifying the document.

Can a notary provide services for someone they know without using their identification? Yes, if the notary has prior knowledge of who a person is, they can proceed without actually requiring Identification.

Can an electronic notary seal be applied using Adobe or some other DIY software? Any electronic notarial acts must be done using software and vendors approved by the Secretary of State.

How much do Electronic Notarial Acts cost? An electronic notarial act cannot exceed $10. Any acts authorized by law cannot exceed $10, while normal notarial acts cannot exceed $5 per act.

What are common Notarial Acts? Signature acknowledgement, oaths, signature witnessing, verifications of fact, attestations, affirmations. Each signature corresponds to one act. For example 3 signatures witnessed would be 3 acts.

Can electronic notary public's charge a travel fee? Yes, an electronic notarial fee for travel is lawful, but not required by law. This fee must be discussed up front. 

What  is an Electronic Notary Journal? A journal that contains every notarial act with dates, times, fees, etc... associated with the Notarial Act.

Can an electronic Notary Public charge for access to journal entries? Yes,  an electronic notary public may charge a reasonable fee for access to journal entries as well as deny access to anyone deemed to use it for criminal purposes.

How many years must a Notary Public Maintain a journal? At least 10 years

Can any Notary do an Electronic Notarization? No, Only Electronic Notary Public's can perform Electronic Notarial Acts which requires special training and a special electronic signature/seal.
